Babarageo

Tim at Independent Gaming points us to a great site, Babarageo, where there are quite a few Flash shmups available to play. The most interesting of which is the banner itself, an interesting idea. Advance along and the images directly below it change… each one contains something to click on and a powerup to obtain. Of course that means leaving your ship in danger for a second or two.

I like the idea of having a simple game playable right on the main page of a website, I like Puppy Invaders at Puppy Games as well. And no, I’m not starting another project here… yet. Shade would be easy to convert to an applet though.

Gun Ranger

Pixel_Outlaw has an early demo of Gun Ranger available for downloading. The style is somewhat reminiscent of Noiz2sa. Pixel_Outlaw also released in the past, for free, Heavy Gun Blossom and Super Bloom. I like his games, they’re perfect for a quick, shooting fix.

Bullet Candy Updated

Posted in everything, games, shmups at 8:30 am by the2bears

Bullet Candy has been updated and “features lots of new stuff and user requests!” The ability to keep weapons across stages is one I will personally get a lot of mileage out of. Online hiscore tables have been added for survival and asteriod modes, difficulty levels have been tweaked and the odd bug fixed as well. If you haven’t tried Bullet Candy yet, now’s your chance. Free to download the demo.

Shoot-Em-Up Construction Kit II

Posted in everything, games, shmups at 2:09 pm by the2bears

Awhile ago I mentioned Gunnar von Boehn’s Shoot-Em-Up Construction Kit. I checked back to see how things are progressing and there are some pretty nice looking screenshots posted for 2 horizontal scrollers that are being worked on. Here’s a couple, from Gunnar’s site:

Review Round-up

Posted in everything, games, web, shmups at 10:24 pm by the2bears

Tim at Independent Gaming treated us with 3 shmup reviews this past week. There’s Gamma Bros, a retro shmup from Pixeljam. Next up is Sky High, a horizontal shmup that “only features one stage but does have the obligatory boss battle near the end.” Finally there’s Hot Layer, “a surprisingly playable shooter … featuring unconventional sprite designs…” I like unconventional, so I’m off to try that one now. Thanks for finding these Tim.

Sky Force

Posted in everything, games, projects, mobile at 8:39 pm by the2bears

I mentioned Sky Force Reloaded a couple days ago, and how I’ve been wanting to play this game for awhile now. As luck would have it I took a look around Infinite Dreams site and the original, Sky Force, is now available for Java phones.

Getting the game was very easy, I sent them a few dollars via PayPal, they sent me an email with a link, and I provisioned the game. They didn’t have a version for my S710a, so I loaded another Sony Ericsson version. It’s for a smaller screen, so I’ve got some sprite artifacts overflowing, but that was to be expected.

As for the game, it’s very good for a mobile shmup. Nothing extraordinary, but it has great graphics, solid control, varied levels and bosses, and lots of gameplay. If you’re looking for a mobile shmup this is about as good as any out there.

pingK

I saw pingK over at Kotaku and I couldn’t resist. How often do you find an updated Pong game that’s worth trying out? Well, what with Plasma Pong awhile back surprisingly often. pingK has some interesting effects that are activated by hitting powerups with the ball.

Dragon Forever

Posted in everything, games, projects, shmups at 9:38 pm by the2bears

I’ve worked in a few updates to Dragon Forever. As usual the latest version is available as a Java Web Start download (automatically grabs the latest version, works on Windows, Linux, and MacOSX I guess…) Some ideas I like:

The purple/green magic spiralling from the wizard will stick to your Dragon and add their velocity to it, thus moving you away from the castle. There will be different patterns and the wizard will be able to enchant arrows to have them follow you. So the magic affects your movement, and the water affects your fire-breathing, with both adversely affecting your time. Arrows that hit you will give a direct time penalty, and too many will end the game.

Here’s a castle with all types of attack:

GP2X Development Prize

Posted in devices, everything, games, opensource at 8:47 pm by the2bears

As reported by Pocket Gamer, there’s a $5000 development prize to the winning entrant who develops the best game or application for the GP2X. It’s a tempting device, runs on Linux… the emulator scene for it is coming right along from what I hear.

Dash Border

Posted in everything, games, shmups at 6:08 pm by the2bears

Danmaku Gata has news up today on Dash Border (direct download link), from Isshiki and his site, The 59TH STREET ROOM. Another interesting game from the developer of Area2048, Z-Lock, and Vax11.

The graphics of Dash Border are simpler than some of the other games, with a vector style this time. The game is played by moving your ship around the screen with the arrow keys, leaving one border takes you across to the opposite side.

Hold down ‘Z‘ to shoot at the spawning enemies, with shots also wrapping across edges. All enemies need to be shot before the timer runs down… things get a little frantic if you don’t. You get a time bonus if you do. The faster you go the more powerful your shots.

Another fun game from Isshiki, free to download.
