Prototype
One of the more pleasant surprises from the Horizontal Shooter with Boss Competition is Prototype. In the “final test phase” the game is undergoing some adjustments to difficulty level, but other than minor tweaks it’s ready to go.
I’m a big fan of R-Type and Pulstar so it’s no wonder I like Prototype. You’ve got various shot-types, missiles, a beam that you charge and a “force” type object. In an interesting twist you can control which direction the force faces, rotating it around your ship. The level design and the feel of the game are great. You have to learn the level, just as in R-Type, if you get killed there are several start points to continue at… without any of the power-ups you’ve obtained of course.
For a contest entry, Prototype surprises and does a lot of the little things right. There’s a highscore table and end-of-game music that is just melancholy enough to make you realize “you were humanity’s last hope”. I’d really like to see this game continue in development with more levels, it’s really well done.
