Blue Wish
Today I took another dive into the Shoot the Core vault and downloaded a demo of Blue Wish (to help you navigate Vector downloads, the link is here). The game is a dojin soft shmup in the bullet hell style. While I’m not normally good at these kind, I did enjoy playing Blue Wish.
You have 2 ships to choose from, Blue Wish and Blue Hope. Blue Wish has a wider shot, while Blue Hope’s oscillates. Both ships main shot will focus after a second or two of holding the button down, with the ship slowing down as well. This works quite well, and is a fairly common mechanism now. Pressing the fire button shoots off a burst, rather than a single salvo, so you don’t kill your fingers trying to mash them. It really becomes a choice then of what type of shot you need… wider area or focused.
I mentioned bullet hell, and it is. I managed all right with this game though, as the bullet speed combined with your ship’s slowdown effect allows tricky but doable navigation of the patterns. The destruction of the enemy and the conversion of its bullets to medallions is always a welcome relief.
Power-ups are standard and smart bombs are “automatic” by default, essentially giving you more lives. It’s not uncommon for me to die a death in other games with a full compliment of bombs. Purists will want to toggle this feature off, as I will once I get a little more experienced with it… kind of like having your airbag inflate when you hit the curb. Not always necessary, sometimes it’s just a waste of the airbag.
The graphics are low resolution, in fact they’re the resolution of my mobile phone, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. The background terrain seems procedurally generated and fits nicely with the sprites. Sound is typical, in fact, so is most of the game but put them all together and it’s exactly what you need for a quick shooting game.
